Jailed activist’s child finally laid to rest at the Manila North Cemetery
Baby River, the three-month-old daughter of jailed activist Reina Mae Nasino was finally laid to rest on Friday at the Manila North Cemetery.
The funeral march for Baby River started past 11 in the morning from La Funeraria Rey in Pandacan, Manila, while Nasino was brought out of the Manila City Jail at 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. for the burial.
Tension started when a heated argument occurred after Nasino’s prison guards allegedly prevented her from answering questions from the media. The escorts allegedly tried to return her to detention earlier than the time set by the Manila regional trial court.
River died at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila due to acute respiratory distress syndrome.
She was born at the Fabella Hospital on July 1 and was separated from her mother on August 13. The baby stayed with her aunt while Nasino remained at the Manila City Jail with pending cases at court for illegal possession of firearms and explosives.
Nasino, an activist, was arrested in a 2019 raid by the Manila Police District at the Bayan-Manila office. At the time, she was one-month pregnant.
