Imelda Marcos guilty! 77 years in jail, banned from public office, arrest warrant out soon
The Sandiganbayan has found former First Lady Imelda Marcos guilty beyond reasonable doubt of abusing her post during her husband’s regime nearly 40 years ago.
The Fifth Division, chaired by Associate Justice Rafael Lagos, found Marcos guilty on seven counts of graft for using her posts as then Minster of Human Settlements and Batasang Pambansa member to create dummy organizations used to stash her family’s ill-gotten wealth in Swiss bank accounts. She was acquitted on three other cases.
Marcos was sentenced to prison between 6 years and 1 month to 11 years for each of the 7 counts.
The incumbent Ilocos Norte representative has also been barred perpetually from holding public office.
Marcos and her counsel were not present during the hearing. A warrant of arrest is expected to be issued shortly. Marcos, however, is allowed to file bail.
The other members of the Fifth Division are Associate Justices Maria Theresa V. Mendoza Arcega; Edgardo M. Caldona, and Maryann E. Corpus-Manalac.
