The Presidency of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute has expressed concern and regret over steps taken by the Government of Naoero toward withdrawing from the treaty that established the International Criminal Court (ICC).

In a statement, the Presidency said it had taken note of the developments with concern and warned that decisions by States Parties to disengage from the Rome Statute could affect international efforts to pursue justice and combat impunity.

“The Presidency regrets these developments,” it said.

The Assembly Presidency said continued support from the international community is important to the effectiveness of the ICC as part of the international system of accountability.

It said the pursuit of justice is strengthened when countries maintain a common commitment to accountability and continue working together through the Rome Statute system.

The Presidency urged Naoero to remain a State Party to the Rome Statute and continue its participation in the Assembly of States Parties.

It also acknowledged that States Parties have the right to raise concerns within the Assembly and encouraged Naoero to engage in a meaningful discussion on the issues surrounding its planned withdrawal.

The Presidency further reminded Naoero that withdrawing from the Rome Statute would not remove obligations arising from the period when the country remained a State Party.

The statement came as the Assembly Presidency sought to underscore the importance of continued cooperation among States Parties in maintaining the international justice system and addressing impunity.

The Rome Statute provides the legal framework for the ICC, which investigates and prosecutes individuals accused of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression under conditions set by the treaty.#
