‘I gave them the position of a lifetime’: Trump regrets picking 3 Supreme Court justices

WASHINGTON – U.S. President Donald Trump said he regrets appointing three conservative justices to the Supreme Court after they repeatedly sided against him in recent cases.

Trump told Time Magazine he regretted nominating Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, all of whom he appointed during his first term.

Asked directly whether he regretted choosing the three, Trump replied: “Yeah. Yeah.”

“What can I do? I put them in,” Trump said, according to the interview transcript. “They voted against me too often.”

Trump appointed three of the nine members of the U.S. Supreme Court, giving its conservative wing a 6-3 majority.

But Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett have not always voted the way Trump wanted, prompting the president to criticize his own appointees.

“I gave them the position of a lifetime, and they vote against me often,” Trump said.

The remarks underscore the independence of Supreme Court justices, who receive lifetime appointments and do not answer to the president who nominated them.
