Guevarra will ask NBI to probe smuggling of passengers from provinces to NCR Plus
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra will ask the National Bureau of Investigation to conduct an investigation into reports of alleged smuggling of passengers from the provinces to the National Capital Region Plus quarantine bubble disregarding COVID-19 health protocols.
“I’ll direct the NBI to look into these alleged incidents of ‘human smuggling’ and conduct a full-blown investigation if there is any indication that the practice is widespread,” Guevarra said in a message.
Reports have it that closed vans and trucks smuggle people through the borders of Metro Manila in exchange for cash. Once at the borders, the smuggled people will be fetched by commuter vans.
Likewise, a video circulated on social media showing a truck full of people being unloaded and herded into colorum vans plying the Quezon – Bicol route, disregarding the government’s health and safety protocols.
The incident was said to have occurred on Sunday midnight, with many of the passengers seen not wearing masks or face shields.
According to Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, this practice serves as transmission channel for COVID-19 as the people being transported have not been tested before entering Metro Manila.
