Guevarra orders NBI to probe twin killings of gov’t execs
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Monday directed the National Bureau of Investigation to conduct a parallel probe into the separate killings of the director of the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) and board secretary of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) recently.
In Department Order 192, Guevarra directed NBI Officer-In-Charge Eric Distor to conduct a case-build up, and if necessary, file charges against anyone responsible behind the twin murders.
The NBI was given 10 days to submit a progress report.
Last Thursday, Wesley Barayuga, board secretary of the PCSO was onboard his vehicle in Mandaluyong City when he was shot dead by a lone gunman.
The driver of the vehicle, Jojo Gunao, was hurt in the ambush and was rushed to the hospital.
Initial police report said that around 3:30 pm, the victims were aboard a white Mitsubishi Strada somewhere in Barangay Highway Hills, Mandaluyong, when a lone unidentified assailant suddenly appeared and shot them.
Barayuga died on the spot.
On the other hand, Roland Cortez, NCMH director, and his driver were gunned down by motorcycle-riding assailants in Quezon City last July 27.
Cortez, 61, and NCMH employee Ernesto de la Cruz, 46, were in a car when they were fired upon by the suspects at the corner of Cassanova Drive and Tandang Sora Avenue in Barangay Culiat at around 7 a.m.
Police said they found the victims dead with multiple gunshots to the body.
