The Department of Justice on Monday formally released Department Order 287 tasking the National Bureau of Investigation to conduct a probe and case build-up into the “ghost dialysis treatment” controversy now troubling the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (Philhealth).

“The NBI… is hereby directed and granted authority to conduct an investigation and case build-up on the alleged irregular and fraudulent claims for payment of dialysis and other medical treatment of Philhealth members and beneficiaries, reportedly perpetrated by WellMed Dialysis and Laboratory Center Corp., other hospitals and health clinics in connivance with unknown Philhealth officials and and employees, and if evidence warrants, to file the appropriate charges against persons found responsible…,” the order read.

The “ghost dialysis” modus was recently uncovered when two whistleblowers came out in the open and claimed that WellMed Dialysis and Laboratory Center located in Novaliches has been filing claims for dialysis sessions under a name of a patient who was already dead.
