Guevarra confirms Wirecard exec’s visits to PH
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Friday disclosed that former Wirecard chief operating officer (COO) Jan Marsalek arrived in Cebu last Tuesday and left in the morning of the following day for China from the Cebu International Airport.
Also, Guevarra said Marsalek entered the Philippines last March 3 and stayed in a hotel in Makati City until he departed on March 5.
“We don’t know if for business or personal purposes because we got report and we are verifying here that he is married to a Filipina,” Guevarra said.
Wirecard hogged international news recently after the troubled German payment service provider reported a missing sum of 1.9 billion Euros or US$2.1 billion.
Ealier, Guevarra directed the National Bureau of Investigation to investigate if Filipinos were implicated in the Wirecard scandal.
Wiredcard announced the firing of Marsalek, who had been suspended from the management board last week. It was reported that Marsalek had been in charge of overseeing daily operations including in Southeast Asia, where the possible fraud occurred.
Also, Wirecard CEO Markus Braun was arrested in connection with the scandal involving the missing sum of 1.9 billion euros ($2.1 billion).
He was arrested on suspicion of incorrect statements of data and market manipulation.
