Guevarra belittles ICC suit vs Xi, calls it ‘political gimmickry’
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Sunday disclosed the filing of complaint against Chinese President Xi Jinping before the International Criminal Court by two former government officials was an exercise in futility, and an obvious political gimmickry.
Guevarra stressed that the complaint might eventually end up in the waste bin as China was not a signatory and member of the ICC.
“The complaint against President Xi is really a political statement more than a legal action, and is thus intended to achieve a political result rather than a legal victory,” he stressed when asked about his take on the communication filed by former Foreign Affairs secretary Albert del Rosario and former ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales.
“These jurisdictional requirements are obviously not met, so we expect the ICC to dismiss the complaint,” he pointed out.
In the complaint, Xi was accused of committing crimes against humanity against the Philippines and Filipino fishermen in contested areas in South China Sea, which have been declared as within Philippine territory.
