Finding love online? NPC reminds dating app users to guard personal data

The National Privacy Commission (NPC) reminded users of dating apps to exercise extra caution when sharing personal information with people they meet online.

In a public advisory, the NPC warned that a person’s online profile may disclose their full name, workplace or school, usual hangout spots, companions and places they frequently visit.

Taken together, the NPC said, such information could create a detailed picture of a person’s life and make them vulnerable to people with malicious intentions.

The commission stressed that not everyone behind an online profile has good intentions, saying users to think carefully before posting, sharing or sending personal details.

Users should ask themselves whether another person really needs the information before disclosing it, the NPC said.

The agency said protecting personal information does not mean being suspicious of everyone or refusing to form new connections online.

Rather, it said, users should be aware of what information they share, when they share it and who needs access to it.

The NPC urged the public to remain cautious when meeting new people online particularly on dating platforms, and to avoid immediately giving away extensive personal information.#
