Family of Jonas Burgos calls for justice 14 years after disappearance
The family of desaparecidos (or presumed captured and killed by law enforcement authorities) marked the 14th year of disappearance of activist Jonas Burgos under the reign of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
The Burgos family said he was last seen inside a restaurant in Quezon City on April 28, 2007 amid Arroyo’s Oplan Bantay Laya. It is unknown if the man is still alive or if not, where his remains are.
“His case is a clear example of how the dire state of justice develops the prevailing culture of impunity in the country,” Erlinda Cadapan, the group’s national chairperson, said in a statement.
Army Maj. Harry Baliaga Jr. was tagged as the head of Burgos’ abductors but the charges did not persist.
“We, the families and relatives of involuntary disappearances, remain steadfast in our demand for truth, justice, and accountability. Surface Jonas Burgos!,” added Cadapan, whose daughter UP student Sherlyn Cadapan is also another desaparecido since the Arroyo regime.
