Fair, evidence-based impeachment verdict will bring stability, says Lacson

Sen. Panfilo Lacson stressed the importance of the verdict in Vice President Sara Duterte’s trial being based on evidence instead of politics.

Lacson said a fair verdict will help keep the country stable.

“A fair decision will bring stability to the country… As long as the decision is fair and based on evidence as presented without any political color, then it will bring stability to the country,” Lacson said during a forum at the Philippine Constitution Association’s 65th anniversary celebration.

The decision should also be guided by the Constitution and not political consideration or public opinion, he said.

He noted that Duterte’s trial is not yet ripe for decision.

The prosecution is currently presenting its evidence on the allegation that Duterte amassed unexplained wealth.

After this article of impeachment, there is still another allegation about bribery.

It is only when the prosecution completes its presentation that the defense may present its own evidence.

“We need to hear the other side,” Lacson said.

He earlier said that while the Senate should optimize the use of its time for the impeachment proceedings, the presentation of evidence should not be compromised.
