Ex-Sandiganbayan justice Victorino nominates Guevarra anew to SC

Former Sandiganbayan associate justice Raoul Victorino has nominated anew Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra to the Supreme Court for the seat to be vacated by Associate Justice Jose Reyes who will mandatorily retire on September 18, 2020.

In his two-page letter of recommendation/nomination to the Judicial and Bar Council, Victorino said “the righteous tenets and ends of justice will be better served if we are to have a man of Justice, in the person of Honorable Menardo Guevarra, as an Associate Justice in the high court.”

“I have known Secretary Guevarra to be a person of proven competence, integrity, probity, and independence and his sense of patriotism through his socio-civic engagements. I believe that he possesses the necessary credentials, professional experience, and the motivation to discharge the duties as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court,” Victorino said.

Last November, Victorino nominated Guevarra to the JBC for the associate justice seat of Diosdado Peralta who was appointed Chief Justice by President Duterte.

Guevarra turned down his nomination.

“I found out it was good, it was exciting, so (former Sandiganbayan) Justice (Raoul) Victorino, thank you for nominating me but I’m still in love with the DOJ (Department of Justice), ” Guevarra back then said.

But Guevarra admitted that in 2016, he considered applying to the high court, saying that ” it is one of my career options.”

“Do you know the feeling of someone who has always desired a wonderful person to be his or her spouse in the future? But somewhere along the way, he bumps into someone else whom he likes and desires,” Guevarra said.

The JBC is the constitutionally-mandated body to screen and vet nominees to key positions in the judiciary and the Office of the Ombudsman. #
