Duterte’s advice to law students is to memorize: Don’t say it in your own words, your word is not the law!
President Rodrigo Duterte has three top tips for wannabe abogados: memorize, memorize, and memorize some more.
In an interview, Duterte said that when he was a student at San Beda School of Law (he graduated in 1972), his fraternity brothers from Le Talionis advised him and his batch mates to use all of their idle time, specially during vacation, to memorize their law books.
“We never really believed it in the first place,” said Duterte.
Duterte, who was a fiscal lawyer before jumping into politics, said: “Sa aming panahon, akala namin hindi namin makaya. O, nung hinarap na namin ‘yung mga professor, ah kaya. So my advice to you, read the book first, understand it, observe it, then start to memorize. Memorize, especially the Codal Provisions.”
“Do not go and say, ‘I can say it in my own words’. Because your own words is not the law. You give me the law in the book. Memorize it. Page per page. Kaya mo ‘yan,” he added.
