Former President Rodrigo Duterte appeared in person before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague on Wednesday for the first time since his detention as he faces crimes against humanity charges over his administration’s controversial war on drugs.

Duterte attended the third status conference in his case, which focused on the disclosure of evidence and preparations for the trial.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Duterte had previously appeared before the ICC by videolink when he was first brought before the court.

He had since missed several hearings with his defense team citing his health condition.

The ICC hearing is also expected to set the timetable for Duterte’s trial, which is scheduled to open in November.

Duterte faces charges stemming from killings allegedly committed during his anti-drug campaign, which left thousands dead.#
