DOJ undersecretary accused of meddling in Batocabe murder case
Justice Undersecretary Mark Perete was accused of meddling in the criminal charges filed against Daraga, Albay Mayor Carlwyn Baldo, the prime suspect in the murder of AKO Bicol Rep. Rodel Batocabe.
Atty. Merito Lovenzky Fernandez, Baldo’s counsel, claimed that their camp has received information that top personalities are determined to destroy his client.
Fernandez disclosed an “undersecretary of DOJ whose surname is Perete and who happens to be the first cousin of the vice mayor” was one of the personalities working together to discredit Baldo.
He was obviously referring to Undersecretary Perete, and incumbent Daraga Vice Mayor Victor Perete, who incidentally, is seeking the mayoralty seat in this election.
Baldo was sued for murder and attempted murder since several others were injured in the attack on Batocabe.
Meanwhile, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra defended Perete, saying the accusation against the latter was unfounded.
“Mayor Baldo’s insinuation of interference by DOJ Usec Markk Perete in the investigation of the mayor’s cases is totally unfounded,” said Guevarra.
“His being a relative of Daraga Vice Mayor Perete is purely accidental. He has never talked about Mayor Baldo’s cases with anyone, much less with the investigating panel. Usec perete is one of the most honest and respected officials of the DOJ,” said Guevarra.
