Deny pa! Roque says ABS-CBN shutdown, journo killings don’t mean worsening press freedom in PH
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the Philippines should not have dropped in the 2021 World Press Freedom Index.
In his eyes, the local media is enjoying a good degree of freedom even though it was under the Duterte administration when broadcasting giant ABS-CBN Corporation owned by the bilyonaryo Lopez family lost their right to broadcast.
From the 136th spot, the Philippines degenerated to 138th this year out of 180 countries part of the ranking of Reporters Without Borders.
“De minimis… wala masyadong ibig sabihin. We also dispute the ranking,” the abogado, who once lawyered for some of the kin of media workers who died in the 2009 Ampatuan massacre, said in a press briefing.
Roque added on World Press Freedom Day that the ABS-CBN shutdown and the revocation of the business registration of the Rappler website “should have not led to the decline in our ranking.”
