De Lima wants prosecution witnesses reduced in drug charges against her
Detained Senator Leila De Lima asked a court judge to clean up the prosecution’s list of witnesses against her to only those with firsthand knowledge about the supposed drug charges lodged against her.
The camp of the former Justice secretary submitted a petition to the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 256 to accept as main witnesses only those who have “personal knowledge” of the illegal drug case against her.
“While the Prosecution may have the right to choose its witnesses for bail hearings, such right is not unlimited and absolute if the constitutional right is to have any meaning,” she said, referring to one of three cases against her on the illegal sale of drugs. “The prosecution cannot draw up a list that will convert the summary bail proceedings into a long-drawn out, full-blown trial on the merits.”
The abogado’s camp claimed that eight new intended witnesses to be presented against her have “merely professed knowledge of collateral and purely corroboratory matters.”
