Court sentences Mary Jane Veloso’s recruiters to life imprisonment
The Nueva Ecija regional trial court has sentenced the recruiters of overseas Filipino worker Mary Jane Veloso to life imprisonment.
This as the court found Ma. Cristina Sergio aka ‘Mary Christine Guilles Pasadilla’ and Julius Lacanilao guilty for large-scale illegal recruitment on the complaints filed by Lorna Valino, Ana Maria Gonzales, and Jenalyn Paraiso.
Aside from imprisonment, the Nueva Ecija RTC also ordered them to pay the complainants fines and damages reaching P2 million.
The court said that the prosecution was able to sufficiently established the guilt of the two recruiters during trial on the merits of the case.
The case was separate and distinct from the case filed by Veloso, a death-row convict in pre-dominantly Muslim country Indonesia.
Veloso, who was neighbors with Sergio and Lacanilao in Talavera, Nueva Ecija, claimed that she was offered by them a job as domestic helper in Malaysia.
Upon arrival in Malaysia, Veloso, however, was informed by Sergio that the job intended for her was no longer available.
She was eventually sent to Indonesia by Sergio who provided her with the plane ticket as well as a luggage for a seven-day holiday with a promise that she will have a job upon her return to Malaysia.
Upon her arrival at the Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Veloso was arrested by police officers for allegedly carrying 2.5 kilograms of heroin inside her luggage.
She was charged with drug trafficking before the District Court of Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia which later sentenced her to death by firing squad.
