Court freezes assets of lawmaker linked to government contracts worth billions

The Anti-Money Laundering Council announced that the Court of Appeals has issued a freeze order for the assets of a lawmaker linked to a construction business with government project contracts worth billions of pesos.

The freeze order covered 55 bank accounts and four insurance policies.

The CA said there was probable cause that the assets were linked to violations of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

The case stemmed from investigations by the Office of the Ombudsman and the Bureau of Internal Revenue, and a separate administrative inquiry by the House of Representatives.

In a statement, the AMLC said the lawmaker had contended that he had divested himself of his interest in the construction business before he joined public office, but records showed that he retained control over the construction companies.

It also said he still received proceeds from the business while holding public office.

The AMLC said it will continue to pursue measures to identify, trace, preserve, and recover assets linked to corruption and other unlawful activities.
