Correction time! Emil Marañon says Magellan battle in Cebu ‘power struggle’, not fight for freedom
Election lawyer, Emil Marañon said that the epic battle of Cebu between Lapu-Lapu and Ferdinand Magellan is not what it looks like.
The abogado called it a power struggle rather than a fight for freedom.
Magellan came to Cebu not to conquer it but as a lost explorer who made a mistake of involving himself in a power struggle between chieftains Humabon and the septuagenarian Lapulapu. It was not a fight for freedom as we were taught, but just like now, plain messy local politics. https://t.co/98CRgV2IYs

Marañon shared this after President Rodrigo Duterte asked that Lapu-Lapu be given greater standing among Filipino heroes. The abogado mentioned that a lot of our history was grounded on manufactured narratives and Lapu-Lapu’s story is just another proof that we remain insecure even as we stepped out of our colonizer’s shadows.
Facts only daw!
