Contrary views over Rody Duterte VP bid snowball
Opposite views over President Duterte’s statement that he will seek the vice presidency to gain immunity from suit have snowballed over the weekend.
According to Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate said that Mr. Duterte was in desperation mode already, in avoiding prosecution once his term expires.
“His statement is a false self-assurance just to pander himself and his allies,” Zarate said.
Also, Gabriela Women’s Party-list Representative Arlene Brosas stressed the President may still join the vice presidential race but he cannot run away from his “horrible crimes against Filipinos.”
Earlier, human rights lawyer Theodore “Ted” Te has echoed the view that a vice president is not immune from suit.
“The VP is not immune from suit by law or by tradition. Non-issue. Non-story,” Te said in his Twitter account.
Just recently, President Duterte said he will run for vice president in the 2022 elections.
This is to gain immunity from suit following threats of prosecution once he leaves Malacañang.
“Sabi ng batas, na kung presidente ka, bise presidente ka, may immunity ka. Eh di tatakbo na lang akong bise presidente,” Duterte said during the national assembly of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan.
Duterte continued, “And after that, tatakbo ulit ako nang bise presidente at bise presidente at bise presidente.”
Philippine jurisprudence only confers immunity from suit to a sitting president.
