CJ Peralta: 5 senior SC justices all qualified to succeed me
The five senior associate justices of the Supreme Court who are automatically nominated to the soon-to-become vacant chief justice post are all qualified for the top magistrate post.
These five justices are: Associate Justices Estela Perlas-Bernabe, Marvic Leonen, Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa, Alexander Gesmundo, and Ramon Paul Hernando.
“Well all of them are qualified, the five most senior justices all of them are qualified to become chief justice. I have worked with them for so many years and I believe that all of them are qualified otherwise, they should not have been there for a long long time. They have already gained the experience needed to lead the judiciary, ” Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta told reporters.
The SC en banc approved Peralta’s request for an early retirement effective March 27, 2021, or during his 69th birthday.
Peralta was supposed to retire on 2022, or upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 years old.
The Judicial and Bar Council, meanwhile, came up with a notice, announcing the opening for application or recommendation for the post to be vacated by Peralta.
Last November, the high court accepted the application for early retirement filed by Associate Justice Priscilla Baltazar-Padilla due to health reasons.
