CA Justice Barrios leads SC voting for Tijam’s seat
Court of Appeals Associate Justice Manuel Barrios led candidates during internal voting conducted by Supreme Court justices for the seat to be vacated by retiring high court Justice Noel Tijam.
Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez, the concurrent SC public information head, revealed this during a press briefing.
According to Marquez, Barrios received seven votes, while fellow CA Justices Ramon Bato, Jr. got six, and Ramon Garcia also six.
Marquez, who was also eyeing Tijam’s seat, likewise received six votes.
Justice Tijam will retire January 5, 2019. He was appointed to the SC on March 8, 2017 and was President Duterte’s second appointee at the high tribunal.
Prior his appointment at the SC, Tijam served as a CA justice. He was Duterte’s classmate from the San Beda College of Law where the magistrate graduated Cum Laude and Class Salutatorian from the San Beda College of Law in 1971.
