Bahala kayo! No class opening in August will triple losses of private schools to P155B
President Rodrigo Duterte can joke about suspending class until a vaccine against COVID-19 is found, but this no laughing matter to private schools
The National Economic and Development Authority warned that failure to open schools by August 2020 could lead to a massive financial blow to private schools.
NEDA said if the school opening for school year 2020-2021 is pushed from June to August, private schools would bleed P55.15 billion.
But if the school year does not open in August, private school losses would surge to P142.124 billion because NEDA said private schools would lose an entire semester.
“With a high degree of caution and a very positive post-COVID outlook, we look at (August school opening) as the
event which will most likely occur in the next few months,” said NEDA.
The August school opening, however, is far from certain as Duterte declared he would not allow classes to resume without a COVID-19 vaccine.
“I will not allow the opening of classes na magdikit-dikit iyang mga bata na ’yan. Bahala na hindi na makatapos. For this generation, wala na matapos na doktor pati engineer,” said Duterte.
“Wala nang aral. Laro na lang. Unless I am sure that they are really safe…That’s what I meant. Para sa akin, bakuna muna. ’Pag nandiyan na ang bakuna, OK na,” he added.
