Amnesty International asks DOJ, Ombudsman to probe police in drug war
The Department of Justice and Office of the Ombudsman have been asked by Amnesty International (AI)to investigate law enforcement officers for human rights violations possibly committed during the Duterte administration’s war on drugs.
“To the Ombudsman and the DOJ, initiate independent, impartial, and effective investigations into the conduct of law enforcement officials suspected of involvement in violations in the context of war on drugs,” AI said in a report.
According to Nicholas Bequelin, the group’s regional director for Southeast Asia, they have found as unusual and highly suspicious police’s frequent alibi of a ‘buy bust went wrong.’
Butch Olano of AI Philippines pointed out that said police’s narrative was unbelievable.
