Villarin joins 30-plus solons in denouncing ex-Makabayan lawmakers’ arrest for murder of Akbayan supporters
Akbayan Rep. Tom Villarin has joined more than 30 members of the House of Representatives in denouncing the Palayan City Regional Trial Court’s (RTC) arrest warrant against four former Makabayan party-list bloc lawmakers for the alleged murder of Akbayan supporters.
House Resolution No. 2064 implored the court to “reconsider the arrest order” against National Anti-Poverty Commission Chairperson Liza Maza, as well as former Reps. Rafael Mariano, Teddy Casiño and Satur Ocampo.
The resolution noted that Judge Evelyn Atienza-Turla’s July 11, 2018 arrest order “directly contradicts” her own July 18, 2008 order that found the same set of evidence defective for being unsubscribed by the witnesses.
“There is no explanation for the reversal of Turla’s order despite being based on the same evidence, facts, and circumstances. Law requires all judges to clearly explain their decisions or orders, with factual and legal basis, for fairness and due process,” read the resolution.
Aside from Villarin, the signatories were led by the current Makabayan lawmakers: Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate, ACT Teachers Reps. Antonio Tinio and France Castro, Gabriela Women’s Party Reps. Emmi de Jesus and Arlene Brosas, Anakpawis Rep. Ariel Casilao, and Kabataan Rep. Sarah Jane Elago.
