Done with the kid gloves: Court orders 10 fratmen tagged in Atio’s death transferred to Manila City jail

The Manila regional trial court on Tuesday ordered the transfer of 10 Aegis Juris fraternity members tagged in the hazing death of law student Horacio “Atio” Castillo III to the Manila City Jail.

This as Branch 20 Judge Marivic Balisi Umali signed the commitment order late Tuesday afternoon.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) was given 48 hours from receipt to transfer the fratmen.

“NBI has received a copy of the Commitment Order of Judge Umali and the corresponding procedural requirement is now being processed to comply with the order,” NBI media officer Nick Suarez said.

The commitment order covered the following respondents:

Mhin Wei Chan
Jose Miguel Salamat
John Robin Ramos
Marcelino Bagtang Jr
Arvin Balag
Ralph Trangia
Axel Munro Hipe
Oliver Onofre
Joshua Joriel Macabali
Hans Matthew Rodrigo

In her order, Judge Umali cited the Rules on Criminal Procedure, that an arrested person should be delivered to the nearest police station or jail.”

“The NBI detention center is neither a police station nor a jail,” the judge said.
