Black prop! La Viña disputes police’s claim on arrested lawyers
Manlaban sa EJK’s Tony La Viña defended the three Desierto & Desierto lawyers who were arrested by the police in a bar in Makati, in light of a video released by Rappler showing the lawyers in argument with the police.
“It’s clear that these videos came from the police, intended to put the three young lawyers in a bad light,” La Viña. He argued that the context was lost in publishing the video, like how the lawyers came an hour before the video was taken.
“When the lawyers arrived in the bar being searched, they had done the proper thing and introduced themselves as lawyers of the bar owner. The police accepted this and allowed them to come in to document the proceedings – at that time, the search was already over and he police were just doing the inventory. They allowed the lawyers, who were not impeding them at all, to document the proceeding,” he clarified.
La Viña maintains that the arrest of the three lawyers is “dangerous for the rule of law” and urged the Supreme Court to act quickly “to be squarely on the side of the legal profession and the Bill of Rights.”
